The Busiest Cruise Port in the World
Two Florida ports, millions of passengers and most of the world’s giant ships.
Quote a Big-Ship CruiseThe busiest cruise port in the world is in Florida — the only question is which one. Port Canaveral and PortMiami have traded the title back and forth, and both handle millions of passengers a year, with most of the world’s biggest ships based at one or the other. Here are the official numbers and what they mean for your trip.
The Official Numbers
| Port | Fiscal year 2025 (Oct 2024 – Sep 2025) | Fiscal year 2026 (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026) |

Port Canaveral
On Florida’s Space Coast, about an hour from Orlando’s theme parks, Port Canaveral is a favorite for families who combine a cruise with a park visit. Its terminals host some of the largest ships afloat, including Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas and Carnival’s Mardi Gras, plus Disney Cruise Line ships and many others. Launches from the neighboring space center can sometimes be seen from ships in port.

PortMiami
Long known as the Cruise Capital of the World, PortMiami sits beside downtown Miami and is home to Icon of the Seas, MSC World America and Carnival Celebration, among many others. Several cruise lines have their headquarters close by. Its fiscal 2026 milestone of 10 million passengers is the largest annual total we have seen reported for any cruise port.
Other Ports the Giants Use
- Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale — home to Legend of the Seas from November 2026.
- Galveston, Texas — Carnival Jubilee now, and Icon of the Seas from August 2027.
- Barcelona and other European hubs — where MSC’s World-class ships and summer deployments sail.
Smaller Florida ports offer a calmer start: Cruise From Palm Beach and Cruise From Tampa Bay cover two of them. For destination ports in the islands, see Caribbean Cruise Ports.
Getting the Best From a Busy Port
On a day when several giant ships turn around at once, roads and terminals are busy. Use the arrival time your line assigns, allow extra time for traffic and parking, and fly in the day before if you can. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can help arrange the timing, and the Official Travel Directory covers hotels near both ports. Every line we sell is listed on the Official Cruise Directory. If you would like to make a career of sending people through these terminals, Be a Travel Agent explains how, and Best of the USA rounds out our network.
Busiest Cruise Port Questions
What is the busiest cruise port in the world?
For fiscal year 2025, Port Canaveral reported 8,602,047 revenue passenger movements and called itself the busiest cruise port in the world, just ahead of PortMiami’s 8,564,225. In September 2026 PortMiami announced it had passed 10 million passengers in fiscal year 2026, so the title may change hands again when both ports publish final figures.
What is a passenger movement?
Each time a passenger embarks or disembarks at the port. A guest who starts and ends a cruise there counts twice, so the figures are larger than the number of individual travelers.
Which giant ships sail from these ports?
In 2026, Port Canaveral hosts Star of the Seas and Mardi Gras among others, while PortMiami hosts Icon of the Seas, MSC World America and Carnival Celebration.
