The Biggest Royal Caribbean Ship
Icon, Star and Legend of the Seas — and the giants just below them.
Quote a Big-Ship CruiseThe biggest Royal Caribbean ship is also the biggest cruise ship in the world, which makes Royal Caribbean the line most associated with sheer size. But the line has several classes of giant, and the right one for you depends on homeport, itinerary and the features you care about.
The Icon Class: Royal Caribbean’s Biggest Ships
| Ship | In service from | Where it sails (as announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Icon of the Seas | January 2024 | Miami, Caribbean, for 2026-27; announced to move to Galveston from August 2027 |
| Star of the Seas | August 2025 | Port Canaveral, Caribbean |
| Legend of the Seas | Summer 2026 | Europe for its first season; Fort Lauderdale for the Caribbean from November 2026 |
Each is roughly 250,000 gross tons and nearly 1,200 feet long. A fourth Icon-class ship is announced for 2027.
What You Only Get on the Icon Class
- A full water park with record-setting slides at the top of the ship.
- A glass dome over the bow housing a lounge and an aqua show venue.
- A dedicated family neighborhood with its own pool and splash area for young children.
- Eight neighborhoods in all, spreading guests across distinct zones.
If those features matter to you, nothing else at sea quite matches them. If they do not, an older Royal Caribbean giant may be better value.

Biggest Royal Caribbean Ships in Order, After the Icon Class
Oasis class
Six ships from Oasis of the Seas (2009) to Utopia of the Seas (2024), about 225,000 to 237,000 gross tons, each with an open-air Central Park and boardwalk.
Quantum and Quantum Ultra class
About 168,000 to 169,000 gross tons, with a glass observation capsule on an arm above the deck and indoor sports space.
Freedom and Voyager classes
Older, smaller giants that pioneered the onboard promenade and ice rink, often on shorter or more varied routes.
Utopia of the Seas, for example, was built for short Bahamas getaways, so a three- or four-night trip can still be on a ship of more than 230,000 tons. For the Caribbean ports these ships visit, see Caribbean Cruise Ports.
Choosing Between Icon, Star and Legend
Because the three ships share a design, the choice usually comes down to logistics rather than features. Pick the homeport you can reach most easily and cheaply — driving to Port Canaveral can save a flight, while Miami and Fort Lauderdale have the widest choice of airline connections. Then compare the itineraries: the private-island call, the number of sea days and the length of the sailing vary between them. Finally, compare what each sailing costs for the cabin you want on the dates you can travel. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will lay all three side by side, along with an Oasis-class alternative in case it offers the better value for your week.
Royal Caribbean Questions
What is the biggest Royal Caribbean ship?
The three Icon-class ships — Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas — are essentially the same size, at roughly 250,000 gross tons. They are also the largest cruise ships in the world.
Which Royal Caribbean giant sails from Florida?
All three Icon-class ships were scheduled to sail from Florida in 2026-27: Icon of the Seas from Miami, Star of the Seas from Port Canaveral and Legend of the Seas from Fort Lauderdale from November 2026.
Is an Oasis-class ship much smaller?
Not by much in practice. The Oasis class runs about 225,000 to 237,000 gross tons, and most guests would struggle to tell the size difference on board. The features differ more than the scale.
